June 5, 2025 — Rubrik is stepping up its game in the cloud data protection space. At its Rubrik Forward 2025 virtual conference this week, the company revealed plans to support more cloud databases and expand into Oracle Cloud — while underscoring a larger mission: turning data recovery into a core cybersecurity strategy. These updates aren’t just about coverage — they reflect how businesses actually store and use their data today. More importantly, Rubrik is changing how we think about recovery. It’s not about simply having a copy of your data anymore. It’s about being able to get back online — fast and clean — after an attack. That’s where Rubrik cloud data protection comes in. It’s not just storage. It’s a safety net built for the world we live in now.
Protecting What Matters Most: Cloud Data
Rubrik announced that it will soon offer built-in protection for widely-used managed databases like AWS RDS and Azure SQL, with more engines like MySQL, Aurora, and Oracle coming down the pipeline. The update is designed to help organizations keep up with the rising complexity of cloud-first environments.
Rubrik isn’t stopping at traditional databases. The company plans to roll out support for AWS DynamoDB and Azure Cosmos DB in the near future — a move that helps cover the often-overlooked world of unstructured and non-relational data. For many businesses, these kinds of data don’t always fit neatly into backup plans, so having a way to protect them is becoming increasingly important.
In addition, Azure VM recovery orchestration is on the roadmap, making it easier for IT teams to bounce back from outages without the usual manual chaos.

A Big Push Into Oracle Cloud
Rubrik is also extending its protection into Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), with initial support for Oracle databases and the Oracle Cloud VMware Solution. This is especially relevant for large enterprises running hybrid setups that depend on OCI’s performance and reliability.
Shifting From Backup to Cyber Recovery
What set the tone for the entire event, however, was Rubrik’s laser focus on cybersecurity. CEO Bipul Sinha didn’t mince words: organizations should assume they’ve already been breached and prioritize rapid, trusted recovery over traditional perimeter defense.
“It’s not a matter of if attackers get in — it’s when,” Sinha said. “The only real safeguard is knowing you can recover from a clean point, fast.”
This shift in mindset — from “backup as insurance” to “backup as security” — is gaining momentum. Analyst Krista Case from The Futurum Group echoed that sentiment, stressing that simply having a backup isn’t enough anymore.
“It’s about having multiple reliable copies, verifying their integrity, and being able to restore quickly to avoid business disruption,” Case explained.
Cyber Experts Weigh In: Assume You’ve Already Been Hit
The event also featured a panel with security heavyweights Ron Ross (former NIST fellow) and Rob Joyce (former cybersecurity lead at the NSA). Their advice? Go back to basics — patch your systems, manage user access tightly, and know exactly what devices are connected to your network.
Joyce highlighted a growing threat known as “living-off-the-land” attacks — where hackers use legitimate credentials and trusted tools to blend in with normal activity, sometimes for months before striking.
“The people breaking into your network often know it better than your own staff,” Joyce warned. “And they’re not in a hurry.”
Ross added that companies need to prioritize the risks that can actually stop operations — what he called “sucking chest wounds” — over less critical concerns.
Competition Heats Up
Rubrik isn’t alone in making cloud protection a priority. Druva and Commvault have also launched new services in recent weeks. Druva now backs up Azure SQL and Blob Storage following a new partnership with Microsoft, while Commvault will soon protect VMs on Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization.
Still, Rubrik is carving out its own path by tying backup directly to security resilience — a message that’s clearly resonating as cloud adoption skyrockets and ransomware threats grow more sophisticated.
Bottom line?
Rubrik’s updates go far beyond product features. They reflect a new reality where backup and cybersecurity must work hand in hand — because in today’s threat landscape, fast recovery isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s survival.
